We Can't Afford Your "tired, poor, and huddled masses" Anymore!!!

They opened up the crown area on the Statue of Liberty this week, thus completing years of restoration work. Unfortunately, they didn't take the time to update the poem inscribed on the Statue of Liberty to reflect current realities.

On June 15, 1885, the Statue of Liberty - inside 214 wooden packing crates - arrived at Bedloe's Island courtesy of our then-friends, the French. Times were obviously different back then and so was America.

In 1885, the population of the entire United States was less than the population of New York City today. We had vast amounts of land we needed to populate, if for no other reason, to keep other countries from trying to take some of it away from us. We needed "the tired, and poor, and huddled masses yearning to breathe free". There were some criteria of course, but we needed bodies and gave away free land and mules to get them here.

But now it's July 15, 2007 and a snapshot of the US population today courtesy of POPClocks, puts us at 302,350,803. Mr. President and befuddled Congresspeople, the LAST thing we need is to maintain and encourage a surge of poor, illiterate, uneducated, huddled masses!

What the inscription on the Statue of Liberty SHOULD be proclaiming; no, IMPLORING, in 2007 is:

"Give us your Doctors, and your Nurses, your Engineers, your Computer Programmers...Give us your College Educated, your Ambitious Opportunity-Seekers, your Self-Motivated. Give us your Upper-Middle Class and above, your Gifted and, for God's Sake, your English-Speaking and Reading (or those willing and able to learn English quickly) because we're an ENGLISH-SPEAKING nation with NO GOOD REASON to become a bi-lingual one! Give us Families who raise their Children with Values and Respect and who place a large emphasis on Education, Success, Social Responsibility, and Upward Mobility. "

In short, give us your Best and Brightest, those coming here to JOIN the American Experience, who yearn to BECOME AMERICANS and ADD VALUE to this country! Give us people of ALL races, religions, ethnicities, and cultures who reflect the above and America has a CHANCE, mind you, just a CHANCE of being relevant in the 22nd century!!!

This is my third in a series of thoughtful commentary on Illegal Immigration, or as I like to call it, "The Invading Hoards of Locusts from the South". If you haven't already, you may want to read the first two posts: Lets start with illegal immigration.... and Immigrant Hispanics and Compassionate Racism.
