The Unloading Zone: Immigrant Hispanics and Compassionate Racism in America

In my first post on this subject, Lets start with illegal immigration...., I covered the main reasons we can't afford to let President Bush and his liberal bed-fellows implement their plan to create a permanent underclass of cheap labor on American soil. It will destroy America as we have known it.

Mr Bush practices what I like to call "Compassionate Racism"...not just the President, but all Federal, State and Local governments. And yes, the private sector practices Compassionate Racism too. I define Compassionate Racism as providing special/extraordinary accommodations to a particular group based on the preconception that they are not as intelligent as other groups. In the case of Hispanics, this can be summed up in one word: Bi-lingual.

Look back over America's history and immigration. Did we offer bi-lingual classes for Italian, German, Greek, Russian, Vietnamese or any other group of children? No. They were expected to learn English and learn it through English immersion. And they did. And they helped their parents learn too.

Call any government and many private entities and you'll be greeted with "Press 1 for English or 2 for Spanish (the second part is in Spanish, of course)." Did you ever hear "Press 3 for Japanese, Press 4 for Hindi, Press 5 for French"? Of course not. It wasn't considered necessary because everyone except Hispanics, apparently, are bright enough to speak English.

Immigrant neighborhoods have always had signage in their native language for at least the first generation, but have you ever walked into a Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, or a plethora of other stores or into every government office and seen bi-lingual signs in English and ANY other language except Spanish?

The list goes on and on. Compassionate Racism: the idea that immigrant Hispanics "just aren't as smart" as "normal" people and need special treatment. The idea is that immigrant Hispanics are incapable of learning English in any reasonable amount of time or in an immersion environment, so bi-lingual accommodations MUST be created for them. Thus immigrant Hispanics are so child-like and....well, lets just say it; stupid, that we must "take care of them".

And this is where we come full circle. When you intentionally encourage an underclass of people to perform menial tasks and the "jobs Americans don't want", you can't really look at them as being the same as you and me: that would make us "stupid" too.

This is not the first time this has happened in America. Blacks were literally treated as cattle and sub-human during slavery because to think of them as "the same as us" would force society to acknowledge the horrors of slavery. Civilized humans don't do that to one and other. But if the slaves aren't really human.......

This is the first time, however, that the underclass made the upper class cater to THEIR needs and desires. Why bother learning English if everything is in Spanish? Why bother assimilating into the American culture when you can just supplant it with your own? Why bother with citizenship or other legal inconveniences like driver's licenses and insurance when penalties are rarely enforced.

Hispanics are projected to be the racial majority in this country by 2060. Let's hope they treat the rest of us with the same Compassionate Racism we treated them with. I hope we'll still be allowed to speak English.
