Depression and Anxiety the key to Drug, Alcohol, and other Addictions?

In the past, they’ve been called recreational drugs. Alcoholics were just drunks. And people who ate too much were just called “fat”.

Fast forward to 2008: How many of you take or know someone who takes anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medication?

Life has become more and more stressful for children hunched over with back-packs full of homework to families where both parents (if there are two parents) work, and to those that can’t find work, are losing their homes as the housing bubble continues to burst, and as we all stare in amazement at the price on the gas pump.

What’s not to be depressed or anxious about these days?

As drug and alcohol abuse continue to rise, one Drug Treatment Center, Cliffside Malibu, believes that in many cases, the patients going through their Drug Rehab and Alcohol Rehab programs are the victims of clinical, bi-polar, manic depression or anxiety disorders who chose to self-medicate with illegal drugs and alcohol, to the point of addiction.

Cliffside Malibu’s Addiction Treatment; be it drug, alcohol, eating disorders or other co-occurring disorders, look at the patients issues through the prism of depression/anxiety being an underlying cause. They are one of the few that do. And if you don’t treat the underlying cause of the addiction, the odds of it recurring greatly increase.

Settled on a hill overlooking the Pacific, Cliffside Malibu almost looks like a resort. But don’t tell that to the patients inside. Everything is first class as you would expect in Malibu, but Detox is HARD. The drugs and alcohol have changed the body’s neurochemistry and it doesn’t want to change back. But the caring staff of Cliffside Malibu is there every step of the way.

After detoxification, Cliffside Malibu’s approach is more holistic than prescription. Yoga is taught as a means of dealing with depression, for example. Everyone is different and their treatment programs are designed accordingly. The goal of each treatment program is not only to clean the drugs or alcohol from the patients system, but to help build the individual up from there, give them coping skills, and a road back to a clean and sober life.

But the Staff at Cliffside Malibu will tell you bluntly that you have to WANT to recover and stay sober.

It’s not always easy, but you have to take the personal responsibility to ensure that when you walk out their doors, that it’s for good. You’re not going to fall back on old habits.

It’s your life, and while clinics especially like Cliffside Malibu can get you started in the right direction, it’s up to you to walk the straight and sober path for the rest of your life. From my experience, turning to the LORD for strength when you need it for any reason doesn’t hurt either.

Nice post !!

Here is another source of information I found. They can help save a life by making it easier to find an appropriate addiction treatment and center that is best suited for the individual and/or the family’s needs.
